Microcement: Advantages and Applications for Your Home

Microcement is a decorative coating used on floors, walls and other spaces. It is composed of cement, resins and pigments, which gives it great versatility and aesthetic options. It is applied without the need for complicated works, which facilitates the renovation of environments. In addition, it offers advantages such as resistance, adaptability and simple maintenance.

What is microcement?

Microcement is a decorative coating made from cement, resins and mineral pigments. This material is characterized by its ability to adapt to different surfaces without the need for complex works. Its composition includes:

  • Cement: Provides resistance and durability.
  • Resins: Improve the adhesion and elasticity of the material.
  • Additives: They help to optimize the properties of microcement, such as its impermeability and drying time.
  • Mineral pigments: They offer a wide variety of colors and finishes to personalize spaces.

The thickness of microcement, which ranges from 2 to 3 millimeters, allows for easy application on existing surfaces, simplifying the renovation process.

Differences with other materials

Microcement is distinguished from other coatings for several reasons. Firstly, its ability to be applied in thin layers makes it less invasive compared to traditional materials such as ceramic or marble. Below are some of its most notable differences:

How to apply microcement: Generic application of the material

- Clean the existing surface, leaving it free of all types of dust,
grease and other visible or invisible residues.
- Check the humidity of the existing support.
- Apply the PROMOTER-PORE SEALER.
- Pour liquid resin into a completely clean container. If colored,
mix the pigments with the resin before adding the powder.
- Mix with a mixer, begin to pour the MICROCEMENT BASE
powder until it has a honey-like consistency.
- Using a rounded-edge trowel, begin applying a layer of micro base of approximately 1 mm to the
surface. In certain cases, it may be necessary to include a fiberglass mesh,
although we recommend always including it.
- Allow to dry for 2 or 3 hours. The times may vary depending on the
ventilation, ambient humidity and temperature, as it can be observed when it dries
because the tone lightens.
- Apply a second coat of MICROCEMENT BASE and
repeat the drying and dust absorption operation.
- Sand the surface with fine sandpaper size 40/50 in case there are
imperfections. Remove the dust produced by sanding.
- Prepare the SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT in the same way as the
BASE MICROCEMENT.
- Apply two coats using the same process as the BASE MICROCEMENT.
- Depending on the flatness achieved with the trowel, it may be
necessary to sand the surface. The sandpaper should be of a lower grit, so
we recommend using 150/180.
- Apply another coat of PROMOTER-PORE FILLER, leaving it to
dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
- To protect the MICROCEMENT, we recommend applying a
minimum of 2 coats of our EXTRA-HARD SEALER, leaving it to
dry for a minimum of eight and a maximum of 20 hours between coats. In
particularly humid environments, we recommend applying
3 coats of WET SEALER.
- We do not recommend covering it, avoiding stepping on it for at least 72 hours.

Application of microcement on different types of materials

On concrete and self-leveling materials:

- Thorough cleaning of the existing flooring. Do not apply on traces of
grease, soot, mould, waxes, etc.
- Check the moisture content of the material, the levels, the existence of cracks and
other defects. If any of these problems exist,
study the best solution. Do not apply on a damp pavement.
- Install mesh, if it is a large surface, or there is a risk of
cracking.
- Apply PROMOTER-PORE FILLER. Allow to dry between 1 hour and a maximum
of 24 hours.
- Apply 2 coats of colored BASE MICROCEMENT. Sand
between coats with 40 grit, in case of imperfections or burrs.
- Install the first coat of SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT. If
you do not want to leave a finish with a strong water effect, it is
advisable to apply it without pressing the trowel so that there is no
excess water that would mark subsequent coats.
- Apply the second coat of SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT, sand
lightly with sandpaper with a minimum grit of 150/180, to ensure a
completely smooth finish.
- Thoroughly clean the result of the sanding and observe the finish of the
material. If necessary, another coat of
SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT can be applied.
- Allow to dry for at least 24 hours. During this process it is necessary to
not walk on the pavement, try to keep dust, liquids or other
particles out. If the application is done outdoors, protect the floor.
- To protect the MICROCEMENT, apply EXTRA-HARD or WET SEALER, depending on the use, location, etc.

On stoneware, tiles, marble, terrazzo:

- Thoroughly clean the existing floor. Do not apply on traces of
grease, soot, mold, waxes, etc.
- Check the consistency of the existing floor. If there are hollow or loose pieces,
they must be cleaned.
- If the material is very low porosity, such as porcelain, and with joints, it is
recommended to apply a coat of PROMOTER-PORE SEALER to equalize
the degree of absorption of the surface. Allow to dry for 1 hour and
a maximum of 24 hours.
- Apply 2 coats of colored MICROCEMENT BASE. In the case of
deep joints, make sure they are level. It is usually
recommended to fill them with MICROCEMENT BASE in the first
step before applying the filler.
- Apply the first coat of SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT.
- If necessary, sand with 150/180 grit once the
material is dry, thoroughly cleaning it making sure there is no
dust left.
- Apply the second coat of SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT.
- If necessary, sand lightly with a minimum
150/180 grit sandpaper.
- Thoroughly clean the resulting sanding.
- Allow to dry for at least 24 hours. Check for humidity. During this process
it is necessary not to walk on the floor and try to keep dust,
liquids and other particles out. If the application is done outdoors, protect
the floor.
- To protect the MICROCEMENT, apply the SEALER
EXTRA-HARD or WET depending on use, location, etc.

On walls and non-trafficable surfaces made of plaster, plasterboard:

- Thorough cleaning. Do not apply on traces of grease, soot, mold, waxes,
etc.
- Check the humidity of the existing material.
- Apply PROMOTER-PORE FILLER. Allow to dry between 1 hour and a maximum
24 hours.
- It is not necessary to apply BASE MICROCEMENT since
the location means that it does not need mechanical resistance.
Although it is recommended to install it to avoid cracks caused by
slamming doors, etc. It is also assumed that they are perfectly
leveled surfaces. If they are not, use BASE MICROCEMENT to
achieve perfect flatness.
- Apply the first coat of SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT.
- Apply the second coat of SUPER FINE MICROCEMENT.
Sand lightly with a minimum grit of 150 to 180
- Remove the dust and observe the finish of the material. If necessary
apply another coat of FINE MICROCEMENT.
- Allow to dry for at least 24 hours.
- Apply a pore-sealing promoter
- To protect the MICROCEMENT, apply the SEALER
EXTRA-HARD or WET depending on use and location etc.
